Tell Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to ban oil and gas exploration in protected areas, such as the Laurentian Channel.

Home to majestic whales and endangered leatherback turtles, the Laurentian Channel is meant to be a safe haven for wildlife off the coast of Cape Breton. But proposed regulations to make the region a Marine Protected Area (MPA) will still allow oil and gas drilling in 80 per cent of the area.

Oil and gas extraction is never compatible with marine protection. Here’s why:

  • Drilling operations disturb the seafloor, increasing sedimentation in the water and damaging sensitive species.
  • Seismic blasts cause physical injuries to whales and fish and can scare species away from important habitats.
  • An oil spill would devastate this area.

It seems almost unbelievable that a vast area meant to protect biodiversity could be filled with oil platforms. But that’s exactly what could happen unless we act swiftly.

Please send this email today to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Dominic LeBlanc.

There is still time to ban oil and gas in the Laurentian Channel before regulations are finalized — but only if you send a strong message right now.
